Introduction

Suppose you want to place a bet on several sports events taking place at a particular weekend. In a hypothetical situation, let's say the greatest heavyweight boxing bout since Lennox Lewis was crowned the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world on April 29, 2000 — was slated to happen between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk on that Saturday. We could also have the two Spanish giants; Barcelona FC and Real Madrid FC at loggerheads with each other in an El Classico derby. For the third scenario, an action packed match could as well be expected at the Australian Open semifinals where Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will be trying to outclass each other to secure a decisive victory.
A smart way of achieving this with the goal of winning a windfall is to combine all three of these different events together in a single bet, this brings us to the concept of Accumulator bets.

What are Accumulators?

Accumulators or accumulator bets (also known as parlay bets or multiple bets) are high risk bets with low chances of winning. However, upon winning, they offer a huge payout. Accumulators are also simply known as Accas.
For a bettor to do this, he has to wager on multiple events in a single bet as opposed to staking on individual events, this leads to high cumulative odds. Unlike arbitrage betting which is not allowed by all bookies, parlay bets have none of such restrictions as they are allowed by all bookmakers. They are just as popular as other types of bets. Due to their associated risks, accas are more difficult to win than regular bets.

Top 5 Biggest Accas ever won.

There are two ways to list five of the biggest accumulator wins ever in terms of the order of arrangement. One could begin the list considering who got the highest return on investment on a small stake or based on who had the biggest payout without regards to whether they achieve it with a big initial stake or a small initial stake.
In this article, we shall employ the former method; that is we shall make the list in terms of how massive the total payout is to the initial stake. The list goes thus:

(1) Anonymous football fan makes an eye-popping £500,000 from a 30p bet.

In may 2001, an unidentified diehard fan of Manchester United FC from Lichfield got a massive windfall off a fifteen-fold accumulator which was composed of all manners of difficult bets, but to the amazement of everyone, all his predictions came through. I'm sure he was surprised at the outcome of the events too, he sure didn't choose all those events with a solid assurance. This parlay bet is on the number one spot of this list for a reason; it has one of the most odds for an accumulator bet at 1,666,666/1. This same unnamed punter is not new to the game as he had made £157,000 from a £2.50 parlay bet, two years before then. To land this particular win, he accurately predicted the top five champions of the English leagues and those of the three lower Scottish divisions. He predicted Leicester's emergence as the Rugby Union Premiership champion, Surrey won the County Cricket Championship just as he had guessed, Gloucester was also included in his bet and luckily for him, it eventually won rugby's NatWest Trophy. Arsenal, Hibernian and Falkirk all did to his bidding as they won their weekend matches according to his bet. His last prediction favored the German side, Bayern Munich FC to outclass their opponent, Valencia FC in the UEFA Champions League Final which took place at San Siro in Milan, Italy. The match ended in a 1-1 draw within the allotted time, an extra-time of football wasn't enough time to decide the winner. The match proceeded to penalties and after much effort, Oliver Kahn went the right direction to save the day. This ultimately proved Bayern Munich FC as the winner of the UEFA Champions League with the scoreline being 5-4 after penalties, Which helped secure this bettor's win.

(2) A £1 bet made a lucky woman richer by £574,278.41

The year 2017 was many things to many people and just like any other calendar year, it unleashed both the good deeds and the not so good ones. If you were privileged to ask a 38 years old lady, named Carli Faulkner, what her memories of 2017 were, you can bet she won't stop feeding you with awesome stories.
Before she became so fortunate, she was a housewife who grew frustrated with her husband and her son's persistent interest in watching matches every weekend on their television. Her husband had been placing accumulator bets with the same initial stake for a long time, so she started following his footsteps. This paid out in a way nobody could have imagined, not even her could have seen the eventual result coming with utmost certainty. The 12 event accumulator that she placed with mere guesses brought her a whooping £574,278.41 payout.

(3) A Yorkshire salesman won £1m on an eight-leg horse acca.

A Yorkshire fertilizer salesman, named Fred Craggs who wasn't so interested in football bets, staked 50p on an eight-leg multiple bets some days to his 60th birthday in a William Hill shop. Although he didn't throw caution to the wind when deciding on what to wager on, he wasn't really optimistic about his chances of winning as he didn't even bother to watch the horse races himself. He only got to know about his gigantic success when he visited another bookie the next day, to place another bet. His acca had an astonishing odds of 2800000/1, this means that his actual payout was around £1.4 million but only got £1m because his bookie had limited its maximum payout to £1m.

(4) Heating Engineer won £1.45m from a £2 parlay at Exeter racecourse.

61 years old North Tawton's Steve Whiteley hit the biggest Tote jackpot ever at £1,445,671.71 when he casually attended an event at Exeter racecourse on a free promotion. As interesting as this story can get, he didn't even have a penchant for horse racing, yet, he punted £2 randomly on six horse racing events. He had so much guts that he tipped a horse named Lupita at a 12-1 odds which hadn't won in its recent 26 races to come first.

The Pros of Accumulator Bet

Assuredly, the major advantage of multiple bets is their momentous payouts. More than that, there is also the entertainment merits that fun-lovers who are into parlay betting for the fun of it, derive from it. Talk about the joy of seeing a £5 bet accrue up to £1000 of total payout.

The Cons of Accumulator Bet

Although accumulator bets can give sheer return on investment if successful, they can also be an awful investment strategy if not executed smartly. There is a higher risk of losing a parlay bet than a regular bet since the entire bet loses even if as much as one bet loses in an acca.

Conclusion

Sports betting in general has seen many occasions where bettors got fortunate enough to make mouthwatering jackpots. Football and horse racing are some of the sports that have been mentioned in this article. It is imperative to note that the list of the biggest wins ever from accumulator bets is not the same as that of the biggest wins ever from general sports betting, as the latter involves all types of bet and is not limited to accumulators alone.

Interesting. Actually you can get lucky but overall accumulators are not recommended, the more you add selections, the more margin (juice) adds up, so all in all you never get any value on accumulators, you can just pray you win, but that's gambling, not value betting.
