Unfortunately, it was stolen in 1983 from the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) in Rio de Janeiro.
Four men were convicted of the crime, but the trophy was never recovered. It is believed to have been melted down for later sale. Since 1984, a replica has been kept at CBF's headquarters.
Interestingly, this was not the only theft of the Jules Rimet. In the 1960s, it was stolen in England, but later found by a dog named Pickles wrapped in newspapers and dumped in bushes in south London.
