Olympiacos will face Fiorentina in the UEFA Conference League final. This is a historic event for the Greek club as this will be Olympiacos' first appearance in a senior UEFA club competition final. By beating the Premier League high-flyers Aston Villa in the semi-finals with a 6:2 aggregate win, Olympiacos booked their place in the final. They are only the second Greek team to reach such a prestigious stage, after Panathinaikos in 1971, when lost to Ajax in the European Cup final. But this time could be different as the final will be held at the AEK Arena in Athens, meaning the big majority of the spectators at the stadium will be Olympiacos fans. They will be the first club to contest a major European final in their home country since Marseille did so in the 2018 Europa League. Nevertheless, each of the last four teams to do so have suffered defeats. However, they have an experienced coach - Jose Luis Mendilibar was appointed in mid-February, following Carlos Carvalhal's departure. The Basque coach know how to win the final as he lead Sevilla to yet another Europa League title. last season, beating Mourinho's Roma on penalties. Doron Leidner is Olympiacos’ only confirmed absentee, while Francisco Ortega and Giulian Biancone are rated as doubtful.
Fiorentina will play their second consecutive UEFA Conference League final. Last season, they suffered a 2:1 defeat to West Ham in Prague. Fiorentina's history in European finals has been challenging, with this upcoming match being their fifth appearance in a European ultimate event. The Viola are unbeaten in the competition this season. First they secured progress in the playoff round against Rapid, before topping Group F last autumn. They were better than Genk, Ferencvaros and Cukaricki, The successful results have continued in the knock-out phase where they beat Maccabi Haifa, Victoria Plzen and Club Brugge. The atmosphere in the squad is positive, while the players confidence is high. Winger Riccardo Sottil is Fiorentina’s only injury doubt, with the Italian nursing a shoulder problem. Some players that didn't start on the last match against Cagliari - Nico Gonzalez, Arthur, Lucas Beltran and Christian Kouame, should play here. As a result, Antonin Barak and Jonathan Ikone are expected to drop back down to the bench. Just to mention, Beltran is Fiorentina leading goalscorer in the Conference League this season with four goals - including a crucial spot-kick against Club Bruges in the semifinal.
Olympiacos vs Fiorentina Prediction:
There is no clear favorites going into the final, but each club have some advantage. For Olympiacos it is the home advantage as this match will be played in Athens. For Fiorentina, it is the fact they are yet to lose in the competition so far this season. Plus, they are more experienced regarding the fact this will be the second consecutive final for the Italians. But Olimpiacos coach Jose Luis Mendilibar is also experienced. This will be his second European final. As I wrote, it is difficult to predict the winners, so I will try with goals. Both coaches will start carefully and that approach is expected to mark the final.
