Tottenham Hotspur hosts APOEL in a match from Group H of the UEFA Champions League.
Surprising for many, but Tottenham won this group in the company of the current title holder Real Madrid. Last season Spurs were unable to qualify for the next stage of the competition, but now they managed to beat the best team in Europe for the first place. This is a huge improvement for Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
Tottenham are the only unbeaten team in this group. They have a record of four wins and one draw so far. If they continue to perform like this, they might turn out to be a major contender for something more in the competition. It’s obvious that they have a very good team and a really capable manager. The question is - are Tottenham strong enough mentally to do anything significant during the knockout stage? We shall see.
Meanwhile APOEL are 4th in this group with 2 points won so far - on par with Borussia Dortmund. APOEL still have chances to beat Dortmund for the third place and to qualify for Europa League, but they will need a favour from Real Madrid in the other game. And a positive result against Tottenham at the Wembley, of course.
We can expect to see Mauricio Pochettino giving a rest to his key players in this game. Tottenham already won the first place in this group, so it would be a nonsense by Pochettino to put his best team on the pitch against APOEL. And maybe this is the big chance for APOEL on Wednesday night - to face Tottenham’s reserves and get a positive result.
But of course, Tottenham’s backup players are still good enough to deal a serious damage to APOEL. The Cypriots need a really great game to get something from this visit to the Wembley.
