Hello again everyone! I know we have a lot of winner here, especially if you go ahead and create an account with the best betting software, but today we will talk about the big losers!
Íbis Sport Club is proud of its nickname: "the worst team in the world. Its mascot is called "Derrotinha" (little defeat) and its fans "protest" when the team wins games. But after decades of sporting stumbles, this modest club from the northeast of Brazil now wants to win.
On the field, the so-called "Blackbird" earned its fame as an eternal loser, especially in the early 1980s, and in the era of social networks it knew how to take advantage of a nickname it used with good humor, and from which many would run away.
"This story of the worst team in the world is left for the 80's when Ibis was really the worst team in the world. Not today. But that's for marketing, for people to get to know us," the club's enthusiastic president Ozir Ramos Júnior tells AFP.
The 64-year-old manager justifies his joy with encouraging sporting and financial reasons, which have given wings to this club from the town of Paulista, located about 18 kilometers from Recife, and which usually plays in the second division of the Pernambuco championship.
Decades of humorous advertising campaigns that repelled victory bore fruit last June with the signing of the biggest sponsorship of this octogenarian club, with the Swedish online betting company Betsson.
The "offer" for Lionel Messi to join the team after leaving Barcelona (on the condition that he does not score "many goals" or become champion), comparisons with PSG because neither won the Champions League or made jokes about teams in crisis generated unexpected visibility.
The "Winners"
Because of this fame "we are known all over the planet, but this cannot be mixed with the professional side," explains Ramos.
The sponsorship made it possible to improve the infrastructure and pay salaries to the squad, which is made up of janitors or waiters who used to play for "love of the jersey".
Last season, the club rose for the first time in 21 years to the first division of the Pernambuco championship, which is played before the start of the Brazilian championship and is the gateway to the D Series. But its permanence is threatened due to bad results.
"Nowadays we are trying to get Íbis out of this marketing. We only work with winners. We will manage to get it out," says Paulo Jessé, coach and school security.
Founded in 1938 by the owners of a textile company in Recife, Íbis got its bad reputation when it went three years, eleven months and 26 days without winning (from July 20, 1980 to June 17, 1984).
There were 54 games without celebrations (48 defeats and six draws), with 25 goals scored and 225 conceded, remembers Israel Leal, author of the book "O Voo do Pássaro Preto: a história do Íbis, o pior equipe do mundo" (The Flight of the Blackbird: the story of Íbis, the worst team in the world).
In the middle of this sequence, Placar magazine published a report with the title "This is the worst team in Brazil". The club then became the butt of jokes, but they took advantage of it to create a brand sustained in defeat and even to boast of having obtained a record in the Guinness book of which, however, there is no record.
We hope you liked this little anecdote from the world of sports, and stay tuned because bettingsoftware.com will be back soon with more about the weird world of sports, just for you!
