Metz welcome Strasbourg to the Stade Saint-Symphorien in the Derby de l'Est in their first Ligue 1 encounter of 2022. This match is interesting as both teams have some good results lately. Metz are unbeaten on the last two league fixtures. They managed to beat Lorient with 4:1 and then shared the points with Lyon (1:1). Sarr, Boulaya and Niane were the scorers against Lorient (plus an own-goal by Jenz), while Boubacar Traore was the hero at Lyon. These results surely improved the atmosphere in the squad, but now the problem is different - lot of missing players. The hosts will be without seven players that are competing at the Africa Cup of Nations, while there are more due to injuries, COVID-19 and suspension. It is clear Metz will be very handicapped in this match. Farid Boulaya, Alexandre Oukidja, Dylan Bronn, Kiki Kouyate, Pape Sarr, Sofiane Alakouch and Habib Maiga are on international duty, Lenny Joseph, Opa Nguette and Papa Ndiaga Yade are unavailable due to COVID-19 infection, while Kevin N'Doram, Manuel Cabit and Matthieu Udol are injured. Finally, Vincent Pajot will also serve the second of his two-game ban. Missing a total of 14 players is a huge problem for any team, not to mention a "small" club like Metz. Their roster is not long and coach Frederic Antonetti has big issues. He will try to replace them, but it is clear it will be very difficult.
Strasbourg are currently in the middle of the table, sitting on the 10th place with 26 points. Having on mind they have a match in hand, it is clear the European spots are not far away. The actual form is hard to be evaluated, particularly because they lost 1:0 to Montpellier HSC in the Coupe de France earlier this month. But there is "another side" of the story - they will now be fully focused on Ligue 1. Two wins in the last three fixtures have a positive impact to the players confidence. Strasbourg managed to beat Bordeaux with 5:2 and Nice with 3:0. Scoring eight goals on the mentioned two games is definitely a good sign, but coach Julien Stephan also has missing players. Two are on international duty - Habib Diallo is representing Senegal, while Alexander Djiku is with Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations. Diallo is very important as he is the club second-best scorer with eight goals. In his absence, Stephen should start with Kevin Gameiro and Ludovic Ajorque in the attack. Maxime Le Marchand is sidelined due to injury, while Gerzino Nyamsi, Anthony Caci and COVID-affected Jean-Eudes Aholou are rated as doubtful. On the positive note, Nordine Kandil and Majeed Waris could both return.
Metz vs Strasbourg Prediction:
Strasbourg won 3:0 the reverse fixture played in September. I expect to win again. The key reason for my pick is connect with the absentees. Both teams are handicapped, however Metz coach Frederic Antonetti is without 14 players. This is a huge problem for the hosts and Strasbourg should take advantage.
