Genoa and Roma take on each other at Stadio Luigi Ferraris in what is expected to be one of the most interesting matches of this round in Serie A. The Rossoblu are third from the bottom with only 14 points. The situation looks critical and the next period is very important. However, the actual form is poor - Genoa have suffered three defeats on the last four matches in Serie A. They lost to Sampdoria, Inter and Verona, while managed to beat Sassuolo. The positive thing is they obtained the victory playing at home. And now they are hosts too, so I expect a good result again. The atmosphere in the squad isn't at desired level, but the support of their own fans could raise the players confidence. Nevertheless, some players are not satisfied, like the goalkeeper Ionut Radu. The Romanian international was loaned out to the Marassi by Inter last summer and was supposed to be the first choice for this season. However, the club officials decided to bring Mattia Perin back from Juventus this January, so Radu is now asking to leave the club. Coach Davide Nicola is under heavy pressure. President Enrico Preziosi has already sacked two coaches. Aurelio Andreazzoli lasted until October 22 and Thiago Motta was fired over the Christmas break. Nicola has signed a six-month contract that could be renewed in the event of salvation. For this match he has four worries. The captain Domenico Criscito is out suspended, while Cristian Zapata, Lukas Lerager and Christian Kouame are struggling with injuries.
Roma are in mini series of two defeats in Serie A. Both losses came at home and against teams from Turin. As You probably know, Torino won 2:0 at Stadio Olimpico two weeks ago, while Juventus won 2:1 last weekend. The fans are not satisfied with the last results, though Roma had four victories and one draw on the previous five matches in Serie A. However, Fonseca's men managed to beat Parma 2:0 in Coppa Italia fixture on Wednesday. According to me, this season could be evaluated as good so far. Roma also secured the knock-out phase of the Europe League where they will face Belgian side Gent. The atmosphere in the squad isn't at highest level after the last defeats in Serie A, but the cup success will surely have some positive impact. Fonseca is still missing the long-term casualties Bryan Cristante and Davide Zappacosta, but there is more. Both full-backs will miss the trip to Marassi due to suspension. This is a big handicap as Aleksandar Kolarov has played all 19 matches in Serie A, while Alessandro Florenzi has played 14. Nicolo Zaniolo will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury and that's another blow. Midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has just recovered when picking up another thigh strain in training. The list of absentees also includes Javier Pastore, Davide Zappacosta and Federico Fazio. At the end I will mention that Bryan Cristante and Aleksandar Kolarov have extended their contracts with the club until 2024 and 2021 respectively.
Genoa vs Roma Prediction:
I expect both teams to score at Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Genoa won the last home match, scoring two goals against Sassuolo. They will try to get a positive result thanks to the home advantage. Having on mind Roma have lot of injured and suspended defenders, I believe Genoa strikers will score. Roma, meanwhile, won 2:0 against Parma on Wednesday and they will try to obtain another victory here. The key striker Edin Dzeko will lead the line, so there should be goals.
