We here at bettingsoftware.com love to explore the world of sports betting wth you, so let's talk here about the second most well-known bets: the over and under.
The first and most famous is the bet on who wins the game, known as 1x2, or Moneyline for short. Before we move on to the over and under, you can check out our article on Moneyline if you still have any questions.
Let's go! As you may know, we gamblers use many English terms, and "over" and "under" are two of them. It will be very common for you to hear someone say "I'm going for over" instead of "I'm going for more goals". Let's simplify things right up front here:
⬆ Over = Over/Above
⬇ Under = Less/Less than
So, let's bring a practical example here with our friend. If we wanted to bet that the derby between Real Madrid x Barcelona would have 3 or more goals. This means that the ideal bet is the over 2.5 goals. In short, if we have 3 or more goals in the game, it is a winning bet.
But what if we opted to place a low goal bet on this Spanish duel believing in a more truncated game?
In this case, his ideal choice would be under 2.5 goals, meaning that the duel will have 2 or less goals.
Over and under 2.5 goals
This is the best known bet of "over and under goals". The over and under lines are usually the most used in betting precisely because they are adjusted odds around 1.80 to 2.00 in games that tend to be more balanced. But this is not a rule. In a duel between Liverpool x Fulham, for example, the odds of ⬆ over 2.5 will be much lower. After all, the chances of getting 3 or more goals in the match are quite high.
Asian bets on total goals
As explained earlier, bets on ⬆ over 1.5, 2.5 or any other bet that has that "half goal" involved will only have two possibilities: win or lose the bet.
Now, we still have on some betting sites the option of Asian bets, which involve returning the bet, either in full or in parts, depending on the bet you choose.
For example: Suppose we looked at the betting odds for the Chelsea vs Tottenham match and saw that the odds for the ⬆ over 2.5 goals were at 1.78. But we wanted to dare a little more and didn't believe that this game would only have 3 goals. So we chose the over 3 goals option with odds of 2.33.
This is a bet that has the option to be returned. If exactly 3 goals are scored in this game, we get our investment back. If 4 or more goals are scored, regardless of who scores, then we win.
We loses the bet if the game has no goals or only 1 or 2 goals.
Tips for winning in Over bets
Now that you understand how over and under betting work, let's explain a few strategies to get the best out of betting on this type of market.
Look for competitions that score more goals
The first and easiest step in your search for the best bets is to find competitions that have a higher goal tendency. But always note that throughout the seasons, statistics can change. As an example, we can consider the Italian Championship, which has always had a low goal trend. However, nowadays the competition has a high average per match.
On the other hand, the Spanish Championship, which has always been full of goals, no longer has the same movement. Keep an eye out for any changes that may occur.
Here are some of the competitions that are currently the busiest in goals:
Find the teams with the worst defenses and best attacks.
Let's take the Bundesliga, which is one of my favorites precisely because of the high number of goals. At the time of writing, eight rounds have already been played. Bayern are the team with the most goals: 28 scored; an average of 3.5 per game. We are talking about just one team.
Now, let's look at the worst defensive system in the competition, with that same number of rounds. Schalke 04, by that point, had conceded 24 goals, with an average of 3 conceded in each match. A meeting between Bayern and Schalke has a very high goal tendency, with the best attack and the worst defense. Not surprisingly, the last meeting between these two teams ended 8-0 to the Bavarians. Always try to observe not only how much a team scores, but also how much it has conceded.
In these past rounds, RB Leipzig has conceded only 5 goals, an average of less than 1 goal conceded per match. If we had a Bayern-Leipzig clash, perhaps a bet on ⬆ over 2.5 would not be so sensible if the odds were too low. Although we have an extremely competent team in attack, we have a very solid defense on the other side. Always keep an eye on these factors.
Avoid betting on derbies
Betting on many goals in a derby may not be a good option. Perhaps the ⬇ under might be a more sensible bet for the big derbies.
Still, my suggestion is that you stay out of "goal betting" on this type of duel. There is usually a lot more tension on the field, the games are more truncated and there are very strong emotional factors. All this can influence the final result of the game.
Use the statistics to your advantage
Looking at the numbers, not only in general, but especially the recent ones for each team, makes all the difference at the moment of choosing the best over bet. Observing whether or not the top scorers of each team will be on the field is also a relevant factor.
How does Over/Under work in other sports?
We have a major focus on soccer, but this doesn't mean that we will leave out some important explanations about over and under in other sports. The concepts are basically the same as we use for goals.
Over/Under in Basketball
In basketball, for example, the over and under lines are usually on the teams' points. One of the most common bets is on the total points of the game. Since basketball usually has extensive scoring, you will often find a bet on ⬆ over 158.5 points, for example. The concepts are the same: you would need 159 or more points for your bet to win. In ⬇ under, on the other hand, it would take 158 or fewer points to win.
Over/Under in Tennis
In tennis, the most common over and under bets are the total number of games in a match. You can find, for example, an over or under bet of 22.5 games in a match between two players. If you choose the over, the game must be 23 or more games. If you choose the under, the game will have to be 22 or fewer games for your bet to win.
Over/Under in Baseball
In baseball, betting on under 10 means betting that there will be a maximum of 9 points in the game, and that if 10 points are scored the wager will be returned.
We hope this post helps you understand a little more about the Over/Under market, we also have a spreadsheet in the works which will help you track your bets a lot more easily, you will see it here soon, and remember, if you want the best limits and odds with no fees at all you need to open an account at the best betting software!
