I play online ( fake and real money). I just started playing real money online 2 days ago.
I am playing the penny tables and i played a s&go tourney the other day.
I placed 8th in the tourney (out of 18).

I really want to become a better player. Any tips? Any books to read? Any general recommendations for a beginning poker player?

Thanks everyone for the feedback, i am sure it will help me out.

As far as books go, check out David Sklansky's The Theory of Poker. It covers a lot of ground and has been read by lots of those that consider themselves "good" players. The best way to improve is simply play... and pay attention. Learn from your mistakes... don't keep making them. Sounds simple... but you see people do the same dumb things over and over again. And learn from watching how every one else plays. Live play is really preferable when you're trying to improve. You can watch what the "good" players at your table do, and see what works for them and what you like. Then incorporate it into your game. And a great way... is discuss situations and past hands with others who play a lot... and ask them how they would have played a hand or what other ways of handling a situation would have been. I would suggest playing live games as much as possible over online to really learn the most the fastest.

just be cool when you play, cool and calm, this is 70% of poker

I play online poker a lot...for real money and not at the penny table...
I also play in Casinos here in Australia...
On vacation 2 weeks ago I won over 2K at the casino on the poker tables...

Over the past few months poker has been good to me....I've made a lot of money....

I have NEVER even held a poker book in my hand

I might start a thread with my top 10 poker tips

Do you know that people that use their own tactics are harder to beat than people that use book tactics. You are different than the other players and that makes you harder to beat.
I would love to see your tips :)

are you playing a lot ?

At the moment most nights at Full Tilt....

Few days ago I played in a $24 sit and go....(costs $26 cos $2 fees)....
Was 516 players.....
Was a 'bounty' tournament...Means that for every player you knock out you get $4....

I finished 17th and got like approx $65 prize.....
But I also knocked out a total of 32 players.....
So I got 32x4=128($)....

$190+ return on a $26 outlay means I got 7-1 on my money...
Took about 4 hours to play so I earned over $40 per hour....

Am I happy??....NO, I'm sad....cos I should have won much more that night

Reason I lost was because it was by then 3.45AM for me and I was falling asleep....
I lost one big pot cos I timed out
Next hand I made a bad call....Game over!!!

My tips for online poker

1) When you join a table check each players country...then visit http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/ and check what time of day it is for them....
Look for tables with people playing after midnight their time.....
Tired players are easier to beat :D

I won't post all my tips at once....Leaves room for discussion ;)

Okosh, you are good poker player, its good you see your mistakes, but you also won a lot of money and it was late. At least you won good money. Also I like that you always want more, that will help you to improve.
I am not a good poker player, but I can share something else.
Have you heard of casino whoring ?
You sign in gambling site with casino, deposit exactly how much they want for give you the biggest bonus. Then most of this sites have a rule that you can cashout only after 20x playthrough. Means if you have 200$ you will have to make stakes for 4000$. Then you simply play with the lowest possible hand, you will lose a little, lets say 50$ but you win 150$. I have done this 4 times and I always ended winning money. You have to have strong nerves though. Because you have to play nearly 5 hours to clear the requirements.

Yes I know about this...But I wouldn't do it...
2 reasons...first, because it's too close to stealing for my liking...
2nd, cos I can make more by playing

Too always want more in gambling is good....But only if done in the right way....
As soon as you winning put your stake money away and then play hard with the profits....

That's not stealing...
It is may be the only way to win in casinos.
Do the casinos steal when they always have advantage ? No, because you agree with these terms and conditions.
Do you steal when you play with bonuses ? No, because you agree to the terms and conditions made by the casino and you play by the rules. It is an art and not everyone can do it succesfully.

Very hard to be disciplined for so many hours...

You can't beat the casino...they too cleaver

It sounds like you have a solid start to playing poker. There could have been some luck in there also but if you can come anywhere near that on a continuing basis you are doing well. Not sure how long it took you but if you are just starting $128 is a great start.

Keep track of everything you are doing and think about your wins and losses after they happen too. Especially what may happen during the losses.

The simple tip is play to win, even at micro-limits. When you win, move one step up in stake. When you lose, move one step down in stake. Learn by watching the players who impress you.

That's not the best choice for table selection . Some regulars play very late . You can find the losing players by checking their stats on SharkScope or for cash games PokerTableRatings (Not very accurate on my stats though , but overall should help) . If you have PokerTracker(30 day trial) it has TableSelector as well , and based on your stats (you can buy or borrow stats as well) will find the most profitable tables .

Don't show your reaction to any move.
As Iliana said stay cool and calm. Never react without thinking!

Well, this is all about luck. There are no magic tricks to win the game but one thing for sure and that is your confidence and Sharp moves on proper time.

u can watch poker game shows on youtube, u can also read some books about psychology. stay sharp all the time and remember "practice makes it perfect"
